Knowing it is a 2.7L I would say probably oil pump failure. These engines have a history of oil pump failure and oil pump sump screen clogging up due to excessive sludge in the oil pan. It could be a devective oil pressure sending unit, but you can change it and see if it make the light stay off or check the oil pressure while the oil pressure unit is out with a guage (may be able to rent it from parts store). It takes approx. 7-12 psi to keep light off that engine should have approx. 25 to 30 psi @ idle with it at operating temp. unplugged or bad oil sending unit it looks like a little black top, you can change them using channel lock pliers just be careful not to over-tighten it they break easy The dashboard "oil" light warns you of a low oil pressure situation, which could exist even if the oil level is fine.

The 1997 Chevy Cavalier features rear drum brakes that can become unadjusted because of normal wear on the brake shoes and drums. It's important to keep them adjusted because fully-adjusted rear drum brakes only provide about 25 percent braking power for the front-wheel drive vehicle. This means when they become unadjusted, the front brakes over-compensate which can result in premature wear on the front pads and rotors. However, like some GM vehicles, there is not external adjusting port hole in the backing plate to adjust the rear drum brakes.

Place a tire block in front of one (or both) of the front tires to brace the Cavalier on a level, hard surface. Ensure the parking brake is not applied.

Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts (after removing the hubcaps, if applicable) 1/4-turn counterclockwise with the jack handle.

Slowly lift one rear quarter panel at a time with the jack and then support each side onto a jack stand place under the frame.

Remove the drum. If it is stuck on the shoes, use a slotted screwdriver to pry it off around the circumference of the drum until you work it off (if there is a deep ridge along the interior circumference of the drum, bring it to a parts store or repair facility to have it machined).

Measure the interior diameter of the drum with a brake drum gauge. Use the inside horns of the gauge to measure the brake drum.

Measure the outside diameter width of the brake shoes using the brake drum gauge (using the outside horns). Compare the measurements to one another.

Park the vehicle on a hard, flat surface. Place the vehicle in gear or in park if it is front-wheel drive. If it is rear-wheel drive, apply the parking brake and then place a wheel wedge in front of one of the front tires and behind one of the rear tires to stabilize the vehicle.

Since many vehicles employ different methods of adjusting brake cables, you'll have to identify whether the cable features the option to tighten the adjustment on it. If the nut and bolt are not present on the connection, the adjustment of the cable will need to be performed inside the cab of the vehicle near the parking brake handle (some import vehicles).

Spray the threaded section and nut of the parking brake junction with penetrating lubricant. Allow it to soak in.

Hold the junction bracket of the cable stationary with a hand wrench and then tighten the adjustment nut with another hand wrench until the cable is no longer sagging. Test the cable by applying the parking brake from inside the vehicle and then trying to turn the rear drums. If you cannot turn them under duress, the cable adjustment may be tight enough. Release the handle to make sure you can now turn the rear brake drums.

Locate the rear brake adjustment port on the back side of the backing plate. If the vehicle does not feature one, you'll have to remove the drum. This may require penetrating lubricant on the hub-to-drum hole junction and a few sharp smacks with a hammer on the hub face of the drum. If you have to remove the drum, skip Step 11 and proceed to Step 12. Some drums may also require removing retaining screws from the hub face. If so, use an impact screwdriver and a hammer to remove the screws.

Remove the black rubber plug (if equipped) from the backing plate to access the self-adjusting mechanism. Insert the 6-inch thin-bladed screwdriver and feel around inside the port to locate the self-adjusting retaining bracket.

If you had to remove the drum, turn the star-wheel to expand the brake shoes outward. Continue to turn the star-wheel while pressing back on the retaining bracket until the drum will no longer turn one full revolution when spun. This will provide enough adjustment for the rear brake shoes.
